This item is possibly a vintage personal or pocket ashtray, also known as a silent butler. It could also be used as a trinket box or pill box. These small, decorative, typically enameled metal boxes with a lid and a small handle were popular from the turn of the century into the mid-century. This particular brass cloisonné box features a white enameled top decorated with a pink flower and blue butterfly. The spring is missing on the clip inside.
